Derf Backderf a passé son enfance à Richfield, petite ville de l'Ohio située non loin de Cleveland. Au début des années 1970, il entre au collège, où il fait la connaissance de Jeffrey Dahmer, un enfant solitaire au comportement un peu étrange. Les deux ados se lient d'amitié et font leur scolarité ensemble jusqu'à la fin du lycée. Jeffrey Dahmer deviendra par la suite l'un des pires serial killers de l'histoire des Etats-Unis.
Arrêté en 1991, puis condamné à neuf cent cinquante-sept ans de prison pour une série de dix-sept meurtres, Dahmer, surnommé "le cannibale de Milwaukee", finira assassiné dans sa cellule en 1994. Mon ami Dahmer est le récit de la jeunesse de ce tueur.
